Honors 391: Challenging Normalcy
I found an entry for this class, Challenging Normalcy, to be particularly telling of the kind of critical thinking that my Honors classes inspired. Challenging Normalcy was a class about difference. We spent a great deal of time talking about disabilities and other factors that create otherness in society. I had some exposure to this kind of thinking from my time working at Little Bit Therapeutic Riding Center, but this class exposed me to all sorts of new perspectives-some of which I didn't necessarily agree with! This was one of the first classes I took at the UW that presented theories and ideas that challenged my own world view.
Below is a response to an essay that I took some issue with, I really appreciated how this class gave me given the space to critically evaluate all theories, even those that were the foundation of our coursework. I laughed rereading this paper as I was putting together my portfolio! I love how the last paragraph exhibits my mental struggles as I try to process these complex ideas while at the same time being aware of my own biases and place in society.
